Keeping NZ Green ...

At Windrider Expeditions we aim to care for our environment and pride ourselves on being an environmentally sustainable company.

Relying solely on wind power to transport us around the Sounds keeps our ecological footprint to a minimum, avoiding the noise and fuel pollution created by motor-powered boats. It also allows for up close encounters with the local wildlife, while minimising potential disturbance to them. Sailing so close to the water makes you feel a part of your surroundings, and offers a unique perspective for observing native dolphins, fish, penguins and sea birds on the water, in their natural habitat.

By choosing to operate in the Marlborough Sounds, a region of spectacular natural beauty, we are fully aware of our responsibility as stewards. To avoid overcrowding, expeditions are kept to a small scale, which negates negatively impacting our environment. Our company is committed to providing enjoyable trips for small numbers of clients, rather than pushing through large numbers of people for a profit.

In addition, we are using and constantly developing sustainable practises to make our business more environmentally friendly. These include;

  • recycling and composting our organic waste
  • minimising the amount of packaging on things we purchase by buying selectively and in bulk
  • saving trees through our choice not to mass produce brochures, in favour of electronic formats and fixed booklets

But we believe there is more to being environmentally conscious than just reducing negative impacts. Windrider Expeditions aim for each trip is to be an opportunity for clients to connect with nature in a low-impact way, learn more about caring for the environment, and what they can do to contribute. Each trip includes the chance for the group to participate in planting a native tree, which will benefit its area for future generations to come.
