About the Expeditions...

Windrider’s are the latest and most exciting way to explore the magnificent Marlborough Sounds at the top of New Zealand’s South Island.

A Windrider is like a kayak, with the addition of a sail and two outriggers. We teach you the basics of Windrider sailing within the first day, before you and your guide set off to explore the wonders of the Marlborough Sounds.

Your expedition around the Sounds will also include land based activities, providing plenty of opportunities to explore the area’s pristine native bush. You can expect up-close encounters with the fascinating sea life that abounds in the waters of the Marlborough Sounds, as well as chances to relax, swim, fish and snorkel.

Each evening will be spent at a tranquil cove or beach, where we will enjoy a sundown drink while preparing our evening meal, which usually includes fresh catch from the days fishing activities. Then you are free to unwind around the campfire before retiring to tents pitched under star-studded skies.

We design your expedition to suit you. All you need to decide is how you want to explore the Sounds. Trips range from a short 3 day adventure to a more extensive 8 day trip. The most popular option is the 5 day expedition, which offers great coverage of the Marlborough Sounds area. And while the Sounds boast some of the most beautiful campsites in New Zealand, there are also plenty of cosy lodges if this is more to your taste.

Your adventure can be shared with a group of up to 8 explorers. Expeditions are hands-on, meaning everyone participates in the range of daily activities.
Naturally, we are dependent upon the prevailing weather conditions and we plan our trip accordingly. Yet ultimately this is your adventure, and we will personalise trips to meet your requirements.

A Windrider Expedition will give you the unique opportunity of exploring remote reaches of the Sounds, inaccessible for most visitors to the region. The peaceful mode of travel provides a chance to observe wildlife without disturbing their tranquil surroundings.

At Windrider Expeditions we aim to care for our environment by developing sustainable practises, increasing our client’s environmental awareness and involving you in ongoing conservation projects in the region.
